Science Fiction/Modern Fantasy- Frankenstein

The chapter book, Frankenstein Moved in on the Fourth Floor by Elizabeth Levy, is about the imagination of two young boys. A new tenant, named Mr. Frank, moved into the same apartment as the two boys. Mr. Frank was a mean, mysterious man and caused many problems in the apartment building. He played loud, strange music and used so much electricity that he blew the fuses all the time. The story revolves around the young boys' fears and their adventure to prove Mr. Frank is Frankenstein and that he is creating a monster. They make comparisons between Mr. Frank and Frankenstein and they observe his behavior closely. The humor is these boys certainty and dedication to proving their theory. They won't tell adults about their theory because they don't want to be called foolish and told to stop the investigation. The boys decided to break into Mr. Frank's storage room and when they see all the electronics, they are more convinced. Overall, this would be a great book for pleasure reading because it is humorous and the story is easy to follow. There are illustrations on almost every other page which helps students visualize the events from the story. The story also includes components of science fiction and fantasy by presenting problems and solutions and having the characters fantasize that Mr. Frank is building real life monsters.
